As our scene opens, we find Lamont Cranston, alias The Shadow, interrogating Shiwan Khan. The Golden Master, having been lobotomized, poses The Shadow no threat any longer, though he still holds information that could help The Shadow in his exploits against crime!

Lamont: Now, Khan, tell me… where is your base of operations?
Khan: I will never tell you anything, Ying Ko!

The interrogation is interrupted by the sound of the door to the cell being opened. Lamont looks up and sees Shrevvy.

Shrevvy: Well hullo, Mr. Cranston!
Lamont: Hello, Shrevvy. What are you doing here?
Shrevvy: Well I was waitin’ for ya’ outside, just like you said, I was. And this fella walks right up to me, he walks, and hands me this letter. He said to give it to you, so I came right in here to give it to ya’, ta give.
Lamont: Well, thank you, Shrevvy. He opens the letter… reads it. Oh no!
Shrevvy: What is it Mr. Cranston?
Lamont: It’s Margo! She’s been kidnapped! Shrevvy, who did you say gave you this letter?
Shrevvy: Just a fella. I watched him, though, and I saw where he went, I saw.
Lamont: Where?
Shrevvy: Well he got in a hack that belongs to a friend o’ mine, he did. The fella said that he was goin’ to the docks, Mr. Cranston. Hey… are you gonna go rescue Miss Lane, are ya?
Lamont: Not me, Shrevvy. The Shadow.
Shrevvy: The Shadow! That’s just swell, Mr. Cranston, just swell… What about this fella?
Lamont: You stay here, Shrevvy. See if you can get anything out of him, I have to go save Margo!

Exit Lamont, leaving Shrevvy alone with Khan.

Shrevvy: Who are you, mister? Khan remains silent.
Shrevvy: Oh, you aren’t talkin’, you aren’t. Well, Mr. Cranston told me to talk to you, he told me, and that’s what I’m gonna do, I am.
Khan: You people annoy me. You think you are doing the world such a great service, working for this Shadow. When I get free of this infernal prison, I’ll make sure all of you pay!
Shrevvy: Hey.. that ain’t a nice way to talk about my boss…
Khan: Your ‘boss’ is just as evil as I am!
Shrevvy: Mr. Cranston? He ain’t evil, he ain’t! You should see how nice he is to Miss Lane all the time, how nice he is.
Khan: Why do you talk like that?
Shrevvy: Why do I talk like what, do I talk?
Khan: Like that!
Shrevvy: Like what?
Khan growls in annoyance.
Shrevvy: So, why are ya’ here in New York anyway, why are ya?
